Tracer un rapide portrait de Lorelei McBroom n'est pas chose facile tant l'étendue de ses activités est vaste et sa personnalité si étonnante.
Lorelei est née à Los Angeles, et bien que ses parents soient médecins, elle a grandi sur la musique folk, rock, pop/jazz et soul. "Mes parents étaient progressistes. Ils se sont rebellés contre les stéréotypes et traditions dans lesquels ils ont grandi et ont eu une approche également progressiste avec mon éducation".

Mais c'est avec le célèbre et légendaire groupe PINK FLOYD que Lorelei débute sa carrière comme choriste notamment sur "Momentary Lapse Of Reason Tour" et " Delicate Sound Of Thunders Tour". Elle enchaîne avec la tournée des Rolling Stones "Urban Jungle" où elle figure en duo avec Mick Jagger sur un "Gimmie Shelter" des plus ardents.
En marge de ses activités scéniques, Lorelei contribue à de nombreuses productions (cinéma, télévision, vidéos musicales, live et séances d'enregistrement) et va même jusqu'à s'aventurer dans le monde de la production où elle coproduira l'artiste hip hop Warrior que l'on trouve également dans le jeu vidéo Xbox "Outlaw Volleyball". Elle participe aussi activement à la promotion de concerts pour Grace Jones, Melba Moore, Freddie Jackson, Evelyn King et bien d'autres.
Puis lors d'un séjour à Nashville au Tennessee, elle devient la chanteuse leader du groupe Blue Zone, avec qui elle enregistrera un CD "Welcome to The Blue Zone" produit par "Hollywood" Paul Litteral qui ne sortira jamais mais que l'on peut trouver sur le site de Lorelei. De retour à New York, elle continue à enregistrer, produire, promouvoir et à mettre en oeuvre ses divers talents créatifs que l'on peut découvrir sur le site "Song Of The Productions Lorelei", sans renoncer toutefois à Blue Zone, puisqu'elle vient récemment de quitter New York pour s'installer à Los Angeles rejoindre Paul Litteral et Paulie Cerra, ses copains de Blue Zone avec lesquels elle envisage de reformer le groupe pour de nouveaux enregistrements et tournées. "J'aime l'orientation de la musique du groupe et les influences "vieille école". Je veux explorer les expressions contemporaines de la plus inspirée des musiques. "Blue Zone" me donne la chance de le faire".
En 2010, c'est avec Rod qu'elle s'embarque pour une tournée de plus de trois mois qui la conduira de Londres à Moscou en passant par Tel Aviv et ... Dortmund où nous avons eu le très grand bonheur de rencontrer la personne la plus gentille et la plus attentionnée du monde.

Carole King. Nous avons aussi écouté beaucoup de comédies musicales, quand j'étais
enfant. Cela a eu une grande influence sur mon désir de chanter. Ma sœur Durga McBroom
qui est aussi chanteuse professionnelle (notamment avec Pink Floyd et son groupe
Blue Pearl) et je voulais avoir les albums pour apprendre les chansons et les jouer
pour nos parents.
Je connais des chanteurs (comme l'une
de mes favorites CĂ©line Dion) qui le font. Je ne le fais pas. J'ai l'habitude de
m'entraĂ®ner pour garder ma voix forte, mĂŞme si je suis malade. Si vous chantez Ă
partir de votre diaphragme, au lieu de la gorge, vous n'avez pas autant Ă vous en
préoccuper.

Quel est le titre qui te donne le plus de plaisir Ă
chanter (avec Rod) ?
J'ai aimé la chorégraphie créée pour "Infatuation". Ce n'était
pas l'un de ses plus grands succès, mais j'ai adoré la jouer sur scène. J'ai aussi
aimé "Hot Legs". C'était toujours amusant. "Having A Party" est aussi devenu une
de mes favorites. Tout le show de Rod est plein de grandes chansons, on ne s'en lasse
jamais !
Quelle est la meilleure blague que tu aies faite dans le groupe?
Je n'en ai
jamais faite, mais l'Ă©pouse de Rod s'est jointe Ă nous Ă Londres sur "Twistin'",
pour faire une surprise à Rod. Elle portait la même robe que nous, et il a éclaté
de rire quand il l'a vue dans la robe à franges rouges. Ca a été un grand moment
bien sûr !
Lorsque vous êtes choriste, vous devez savoir comment très bien chanter mais vous
devez savoir aussi très bien danser ? Qui s'occupe de la chorégraphie?
Quand je suis
arrivée, les chansons étaient déjà chorégraphiées. Di Reed et Bridget Cady se sont
occupées de moi. J'ai dû apprendre et répéter 30 chansons en une semaine avant que
je ne rencontre Rod pour la première fois. Cela a été un défi, mais les filles ont
été super efficaces avec moi.
Tu as travaillé avec les plus grands noms de la musique.

La dernière fois que les Stones étaient en tournée
Ă New York en 2006, j'ai fait dire Ă Mick Jagger que je voulais le voir et il a pris
des dispositions pour moi afin je vienne en backstage lui dire bonjour. Il y avait
environ 10 ans que je ne l'avais pas vu. J'ai aussi passé du temps avec Keith Richards
et sa femme Patty Hanson après le spectacle. Ils sont très isolés des gens, mais
j'ai été heureuse d'être si bien reçue après tant d'années. J'ai également pris contact
avec Bill Wyman leur bassiste d'origine lors de la tournée de Rod. Nous avons continué
à échanger des mails. Bill a toujours été très gentil avec moi.
David Gilmour a été
le plus gentil. Quand mon père est décédé en 2000, il a payé pour je puisse aller
avec mon fils à Los Angeles pour les obsèques. Lui et ma sœur sont restés en contact
étroit et elle a travaillé avec Pink Floyd plus que tout autre choriste. J'ai cessé
de tourner avec eux quand mon fils est né en 1993.
J'ai perdu le contact avec Billy
Idol, mais lorsqu'il vivait en Angleterre, ma sœur lui écrivait et a fait quelques
concerts avec lui dans les années 90.
Je n'ai jamais connue Annie Lennox, malheureusement.
Je
connais beaucoup d'autres célébrités comme Chaka Khan, l'auteur-
L'un de mes plus grands souhaits serait
de pouvoir chanter avec Steely Dan ou Donald Fagen. J'adore cette musique et depuis
toujours !
Nous avons trouvé en toi une personne pleine de gentillesse et de modestie.
Le milieu de la musique n'a pas une très bonne réputation où l'argent et la gloire
l'emporte sur le côté artistique. Mais tu as gardé une âme pure .... comment l'expliques-
Mes parents étaient médecins, j'ai donc grandi dans la classe moyenne. Je n'ai jamais
eu à supporter la pauvreté quand j'étais enfant. Mais j'ai trouvé beaucoup de gens
autour de nous qui Ă©taient snobs et beaucoup Ă©taient racistes. Je n'aimais pas ressentir
leurs préjugés. Mon père m'a toujours rappelé qu'il avait travaillé comme serveur
lorsque 'il était jeune pour payer ses études. Il m'a toujours encouragée à être
sensible aux gens qui n'ont pas eu autant de chance que moi. J'ai aussi vécu des
moments difficiles. Je dis toujours que l'industrie musicale, c'est comme la fĂŞte
ou la famine. On ne sait jamais comment la vie peut changer, vous devez donc ĂŞtre
humble. Être orgueilleux empêche de nombreuses personnes célèbres de se connecter
avec les gens qui leur ont donné leur célébrité.

ce soir, quel sujet et quel thème choisirais-
Quelque chose sur l'amour, je suppose
que tout le monde a quelque chose à raconter sur ce thème-
Surtout, je veux pour mon fils une vie
réussie et heureuse. J'aimerais pouvoir enregistrer et faire carrière, même tard
dans la vie, et j'aimerais vivre en Italie sur mes vieux jours avec un homme que
j'aime et qui m'aime.

Your voice is unique, how do you work? (You can use your voice from low to high and tessitura is very moving and gives you the chills) Do you need to practice every day?
I studied singing classically with a great teacher named Mark Forrest. I warm up before doing a show singing scales. I have a 3 ½ octave range, and find that my lower range is stronger and richer with age.
Did you grow up studying music?
Yes. I started out playing piano from age 4 to 7. Then I started taking guitar lessons. I didn’t study singing until I was in college after high school.
What was the triggering element of your musical career?
My Father turned me on to a variety of styles of music when I was little. He always played music on the weekends around the house, from jazz and big bands to opera and pop radio. There are several singers that I really liked growing up: Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Billy Holiday, and later Chaka Khan.
I remember loving the Beatles music and later got into folk music by people like James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, and Carole King. We also listened to a lot of musicals when I was a child. That had a big influence on my desire to perform. My sister Durga McBroom who is also a professional singer most notably with Pink Floyd and her band Blue Pearl) and I would get sound track albums, learn the songs and perform them for our parents.
Is it true that singers need to rest their voices (for example, does not speak for a full day)?
I know of some singers (like one of my favourites Celine Dion) who do that. I don’t. I have used my training to keep my voice strong even when I’ve been sick. If you sing from your diaphragm instead of your throat, you don’t have to worry as much about talking.
In your website we can see that you touch a large number of activities: Designer, Producer, Activism, involved in Politics, etc. Can you tell us a little about each of these themes?
I have several talents and interests. I do some art and web design. I have also produced video and CD projects. I am also a published songwriter. There is information about those things on my website.
I am also an activist. I come from a very politically active family. My Father used to visit the White House as a college student as a guest of Eleanor Roosevelt. He later befriended Martin Luther King and worked with him during the U.S. Civil rights movement. He also debated Malcolm X. My sister Marcia McBroom has worked extensively with UNICEF, the United Nations and has a Foundation called For Our Children’s Sake that helps children around the world and has a chapter in Malawi Africa. I have many liberal points of view and topics I support. I also believe in promoting racial tolerance and cultural awareness. My newest project is called “Who Cares We Care� We are working to raise money to help women and Children in Darfur in the Sudan using a discount online shopping mall found through my site http://www.whocareswecare.org. I want to expand to help children in the U.S. and other parts of the world. Children are the most important people in our lives, because they will carry the human race forward.
What are your biggest song inspirations and what songs are most personal to you?
That would be too long a list for me to write! J I have MANY favourite songs in different styles. “Man in the Mirror�by Michael Jackson is one.
What song is the most fun for you to perform (with Rod)?
I loved the dancing created for “Infatuation� It wasn’t one of his biggest hits, but I loved performing it. I also liked “Hot Legs� That was always fun. “Having A Party�also became a favourite for me. Rod’s whole show is full of great songs and I never got tired of them!
What is the best joke you ever played on the Rod Stewart Band?
I never did one, but Rod’s wife joined us on “Twistin’�as surprise for Rod in London. She was wearing the same dress we wore and he broke out laughing when he saw her in the fringed red dress. It was a highlight for sure!
When you are a background singer you have to know how to sing very well and you should also know how to dance well? Who handles choreography?
When I joined, the songs had already been choreographed. Di Reed and Bridget Cady thought them to me. I had to learn and rehearsed 30 songs in one week before I met Rod for the first time. It was a challenge, but the girls were super helpful to me.
You have worked with the biggest names in music. Do you stay in touch with people like Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Billy Idol, Annie Lennox, and David Gilmour?...
The last time the Stones were on tour in New York (2006), I sent word to Mick Jagger that I wanted to see him and he made arrangements for me to come back stage and say hello him. It had been about 10 years since I’d seen him. I also hung out with Keith Richards and his wife Patty Hanson after the show. They are very insolated people, but I was happy to be so well received after so many years. I also got in touch with Bill Wyman their original bass player during Rod’s tour. We have continued to email each other. Bill was always very nice to me.
David Gilmour was most kind. When my Father passed away in 2000, he paid for my son and me to go to Los Angeles for the Family services. He and my sister have kept in close touch and she has worked with Pink Floyd more than any other backing vocalist. I stopped touring with them after my son was born in 1993.
Billy Idol and I lost touch, but while she lived in the UK, my sister did some writing and gigging with him during the �0s.
I never got to know Annie Lennox, unfortunately.
I know many other celebrities like Chaka Khan, songwriter Diane Warren, guitarist Ray Parker Jr. (who played on Rod’s “Soul Book�CD), producer Nile Rodgers and a long list of others.
What are the artists with whom you'd like to work today?
One big favourite act I wish I could sing with is Steely Dan or Donald Fagen. I love that music and always have!
We have found in you a person full of kindness and full of modesty. The music community has not a very good reputation where money and glory outweighs the artistic side. But you have kept a pure soul.... how do you explain?
My parents were Doctors, so I grew up in the middle class. I didn’t have a chip on my shoulder about being in poverty as a child. But I did find many of the people we were around to be snobs and many were racists. I didn’t like to feel their prejudiced attitudes. My Father always reminded me that he was a waiter as a young man working his way through school. He always encouraged me to be sensitive to people who were not as fortunate as I was. I have also lived through hard times. I always say the music business is like feast or famine. You never know how life can change, so you must be humble. Being prideful blocks many famous people from connecting with people who gave them their celebrity.
If you had to write a song tonight what topic and theme would you choose?
Something about love I guess. That’s something everyone can relate to.
If you had 3 wishes for the years to come, what would they be?
Mostly I want my son to have a successful and happy life. I’d like to have a recording career even late in life, and I’d love to live in Italy in my old age with a man I love who loves me.
Have you felt like a big family within the band of Rod Stewart, a great complicity between you?
I’m not sure I understand your question, but I like Rod’s band family very much. They are easy to work with and very professional as well as fun! Rod is very charming and I like his family too.
You will be with the band for the next tour ?
Rod’s new CD is another collection of standards. It’s “Song Book Vol. 5� We will begin promoting it this fall.
